Facilitation
Facilitation is a relatively new term in the field of Indigenous Relations. It encompasses a broad range of activities, such as:
- Chairing meetings or negotiation sessions to keep the parties on track and productive;
- Assisting parties in joint problem solving;
- Acting in a mediation role. Sometimes this is “shuttle diplomacy” or more active joint problem solving;
- Option identification. At times parties need an outside expert to hear their respective interests and arguments and come up with options for them to consider;
- Workshops to assist an organization better understand their interests or improve their Indigenous competencies;
- Or, facilitation can mean to make presentations and hear comments at, for example, community or band meetings.
Dave can support your negotiations, community discussions and interest identification processes using his years of experience with Indigenous matters. As Executive Director of the BC Treaty Commission from 1998 to 2000 he was responsible for managing facilitation by professional staff and Commissioners of the BC treaty process, the most complex treaty negotiation process in Canada.
Dave also created the written Constitution of the Métis Nation British Columbia as well as its Governance structure by holding meetings throughout the province with community members, hearing their ideas, questions and concerns and turning all this into a viable governance system.
